I liked the fact that you watched the show carefully before giving your opinion... you didn't like it that much and that's fine. By my side I will still watch and enjoy the show and look forward to your reviews.
I really respect that you don't bash it even if its not your thing. And the hype as well, my personal opinion is for first time viewers should drown out both the hype and the hate and take it with cautious optimism. My opinion anyway.
Though, and I mean completely respectfully (I hate the vocal minority more than anyway), I'm a tad confused with your complaint on the songs. You complain insert songs have no meat and are filler, then you complain the songs have a role in the plot. This is not me bashing you, this is me being genuinely confused and wanting some clarification on what exactly you mean.
To me, it doesn't matter that you don't hate it. I'm just glad you gave it an actual chance. I've seen people claiming they gave it a chance so they could say they're justified, when in reality, they went in angry, completely expecting and wanting to hate it, and they get out what they put into it. While it's nice knowing you're fine with it, I would've been completely fine with you saying that you don't like it in the slightest. It's also nice knowing you won't be ripping on them because it's "cool" to do so.
@GodzillaWolfI guess that is a weird statement from me, that's what happens when I'm not scripted. I get that the target audience probably loves the occasional song so it does have a purpose, it just feels like filler to me taking the place of where the plot should go. It does give the songs some purpose to the story when they use it for exposition and progress the story, but that means you have to listen to it, so it's a double edged sword. It's another of those "it's just not for me" things, I get why they put in songs, I'd just prefer them to use the time for the story.
I understand. In that case, you probably wouldn't like season 3's finale, since it's a Musical Episode that relies heavily on the songs to tell the story. I personally think it was done well, but I understand why people may not like it.
Personally, I do like all the songs, I even write my own for MLP fanfics, but I respect it's not your cup of tea. I'm just glad you were respectful to the ones who do like it, there's so many people on both sides who just don't respect the other ones.
On another note, any chance we'll see you give Scott a Flam minifigure to sign someday? ;)
This review is absolutely fantastic. I think you handled this series in the best way you could given the circumstances of your decision to watch it. This show, like many, can be killed by the hype of its fandom's vocal minority, but you gave the show a very good chance despite that. I only have two questions for you; first, what was your original review of this show like (the one you felt you rushed on) and second, what is your opinion of the shows villains, Discord in particular.
@Shane Cooper Originally I was a little more unfair to the depth of the characters, while they are still kept simple to keep a certain status quo and so the target audience can follow them, they do retain traits and lessons from prior episodes which I didn't give them credit for at first. As far as the villains go, I haven't watched enough to see much of them, I dont think I saw Dischord at all. I didn't watch the whole thing, just picked random episodes from Netflix.
Oh my, what a great review, if i must say, but i must say what Fun is there with Q from Star Trek if u dont watch the episodes with Q, its the same with Discord, but i do hope u gonna like Discord as a viliain Ps your toy reviews rulls \m/
I think you'd like the other two parters, since they're normally more complex, dark, and serious in tone. The villains as a whole tend to be surprisingly dark. The third one in particular (though he's presented intentionally as a presence rather than a character to bring to mind Sauron from the Lord of the Rings, just warning you) is very dark. As for Discord, I'd describe him as a G-rated Emperor Joker crossed with Q from Star Trek.
You should check out the Return of Harmony 2 parter (Season 2 opener) and the Canterlot Wedding 2 parter (Season 2 closer). They're really good watches (The S2 closer does feature 3 songs, but they're not bad).
There's also a mini-arc in Season 1, with Season 1, Ep 3 (The Ticket Master), S 1, Ep 14 (Suited for Success), and S 1, Ep 26 (Best Night Ever).
at first i was almost sure i was going to hate the show, i had no reasons to like it, but i became brony after the first two episodes, yeah the series arent perfect, but i really enjoy the show, and your opinion its ok, dont see any problem if you dont like it or hate it XP
As others have said, while this show largely isn't your thing, I would still give the two parters a chance as they have more of the serious narrative you like, as well as some great villains.
May not change your opinion on the show much as a whole, but may be a little extra element of it you can enjoy. Up to you in the end.
Also one more thing; You mentioned how some Bronies tend to be very insistent on people watching this show. If I may play Devils Advocate for a moment (because I don't exactly condone such pushy behavior), I can understand why people do it.
Allot of people judge the show by it's intended demographic. This of course does not apply to you because you gave it a chance, but so many people just assume they know everything right off the bat simply because it's titled "My Little Pony" without seeing if it will play with expectations or not.
Just thought I'd get that off my chest. Thanks for giving the show a chance and judging it fairly, even if it's not your thing.
@Philip Dunbar I realize that since the show is designed for young girls it takes a more convincing argument for someone to give it a chance, that's not what I mean. The most vocal Bronies I've encountered are the kind that dont present the show, they just insist that a person has to watch it and they will love it, and don't take no for an answer. It's very pushy and invasive, and I'm sure there's an episode somewhere that tells people not to act like that. Take my toy reviews for instance, if I waved an action figure at the camera and just insisted you buy it because it's that good, it would only put you off to buying it. The same was true here, and it's why I took so long to give the show a chance and I know a lot of others in the same boat. That's the vocal minority that gives the fandom a bad name, and they need to find a way of selling the show to others while respecting that person's personal space.
i personally love the songs(especially winter wrap up <3) but i can totally understand why you may think they are pointless and i am very happy to see you at least gave it a try :)
OK I just want to clarify something; I did understand what you said and I agree that some Bronies are WAY too pushy about it (as some are). You gave it a chance and I appreciate that. I'm just saying some may be stronger on the encouragement because it's so easily dismissed. Just mentioning that portion is all.
In truth TJ I can completely understand. I am glad you gave it a chance. A bit sad that you're not a fan but I respect it. And I am also sad you were a bit forced by bronies to do this. I am a brony but I can understand personal space. I would've forced this on ya. I would've said watch one episode and if it doesn't interest you after watching it. Then I'll leave you be just like with you trying to get more Kamen Rider Fans. Also me personally the main reason I got into MLP was mostly due to the fan music. But I digress. Glad you gave it a chance and I can't wait to see more reviews and talks from ya.

You missed the best episode though Season 2 episode 26. XD (seriously "This Day Aria"'s the only good song.)
Also not a Brony

Yeah, we bronies hate the vocal minority too.

I fully empathize with Pinkie Pie. There are times I truly hate her actions in some of the episodes.
It's cool you gave this show a chance. Good on you. :) A rather good analysis and hey, you learned something. ;)
I think 1 episode of Young Justice referenced and took a jabbed at this show.
